We watch with joy as so many of our human friends push the boundaries of their thinking and belief systems to ask the simple question: “Who am I and what is the purpose of my life?” Faced with circumstances and difficulties that are new to so many, who wonder if they have the capacity to cope, it is heartwarming to see the determination of so many souls to push the boundaries of their beliefs to seek the guidance of spiritual knowledge and understanding.

First you must know that although you identify as being the person with the name and conditions, hopes and frailties, that you believe yourselves to be, you must accept that you are a great deal more. As we have said so often before, the apparent reality of your life is shaped largely by your own thoughts and feelings, much of which is unconscious. But until you come to some clarity about your physical and material Self you will forever feel separated from the indwelling soul, or spirit, that is the real you, that existed prior to the birth of your physical body and will continue to live after its demise. This is the eternal part of you which is unique and belongs entirely to Source because it is part of Source Itself.

There are damaged people but there is no such thing as a damaged soul. Soul of itself is whole and perfect, innocent and blameless and has all the attributes of Source because every soul is part of Source and cannot be separated. Soul seeks to take on human incarnation out of Source’s desire to experience sensate life on this plane of existence. It does not judge those experiences and ultimately in Source’s mind there is no good or bad experience - it is just experience.

The human being, however, is another matter and all human belief systems are shaped by cultural, educational, religious and other conditioning and the schism that exists between soul’s experience and human judgement is caused by human thinking and not by soul intention.

Humans live their lives on a sliding scale that operates between what is perceived to be happiness and unhappiness and the personality is constantly caught up in judging where it is on that scale. The only way you can see your thinking and bring the unconscious thinking processes into awareness is by standing back from it. When you take the position of witness you do not judge, you simply observe, and from this position you can decide whether a certain aspect of your mental attitude is helpful to you or not. To see something previously unseen within the self is a cause for celebration, partly because you have the choice to continue with that psychological dynamic or not, and partly because, in order to view yourself with such clarity you have been operating from the true self, the soul. The more you view yourself and your life from the true Self, the easier it is. Personality always feels separated (and sometimes it wants to be) but soul does not. As you view from the perspective of soul, you view from the eyes of Source. The sense of oneness is complete. There is no judgement, just intelligence and love and the knowing that you are part of the great Presence that is Source.

You don’t need to argue with yourself to change your thinking. What is required is to observe your thinking and allow that which is limiting to you to quietly slip away from you. When you really see something clearly you have that opportunity, and each time it comes up it will have less sway over your emotions, until you reach the point that it doesn’t appear at all, for it is gone. This is freedom and in that freedom you experience your true self more fully. You do not have to perform some sort of spiritual gymnastics to have mastery over yourself. As you live more freely from entrenched thought and judgement, fear and worry, life itself becomes easier and happier as you can simply experience the wholeness of your true Self. From this point right choices and actions naturally appear for there really are no mistakes.

Past memory is obscured from soul as it enters human form in order that it may experience anew that which it has laid down for its life. Personality is shaped largely through early experience before it has any choice and also through inherited conditions. You cannot escape those conditions but through awareness you have the opportunity to live unencumbered by their effects. Thus life can be lived from the point of view of soul and not from the ego or personality, and from this position can be lived more richly and joyfully.

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen very much during the good times. It is during times of challenge and difficulty that you seek to find yourself more deeply and free yourself of the chains of the thinking mind. The greatest impulse behind this endeavour is Love. Relish this love and allow it to flow freely to you and from you, for it is truly who you are. Know this.
